Making SamRewritten was a blast, and working with all the contributors from around the world is something I could have never imagined. For a long time I didn't have time to allocate to this project, but now is a little bit different. I'd like to announce that I have some time to work on SAM again as a side project!
This repository still works for installations of Steam through system package managers.
My plans for the new SAM would involve:
* A rewrite from scratch in Rust
* Keeping the most important features
* Provide better compatibility for all distros out of the box
* An upgrade to GTK4 for optimal desktop integration
* Support for Snap or/and Flatpak
* A Windows port?
* Support from the community
That's right, without support from the community, I will not make it. I will need help for the UI section, as coding the whole user interface from scratch all over again is too much effort for me. Therefore, if you know anyone with a bit of experience in Rust and software development, feel free to share that SAM will be looking for serious, committed contributors.
While I do not want to monetize SAM, with ads, or data collection, and keep it open-source, I will need a source of revenue for the time I will allocate to the SAM reboot. Therefore, I decided to begin a crowdfunding to make this a reality.
I'm looking to raise the equivalent of 500 USD to start the project. I estimate a year of work after the project start to have the first releases.
